The Byzantine tradition of inner stillness (hesychia): the Jesus Prayer, watchfulness (nepsis), the guarding of the heart, the psychosomatic method (posture, breath, the gaze turned inward), and the vision of the uncreated light; codified by Nikephoros the Hesychast and Gregory of Sinai on Athos, defended by Gregory Palamas against Barlaam of Calabria (1338-1351), carried into Bulgaria at Paroria and Kilifarevo (Theodosius and Euthymius of Tarnovo) and thence to Russia. In RENAISSANCE 3.0 the contemplative tradition that treats the navel and the heart as the seat of the mind, read as navelspect: contemplation of the first bond.
