Peripatetic School

Aristotle's Lyceum. The Peripatetics walked while they philosophized. Aristotle's encyclopedic system — logic, physics, biology, ethics, politics, poetics, metaphysics — became THE framework of organized knowledge. After the Greek original declined, the tradition was preserved and extended by Islamic philosophers (Al-Fārābī, Avicenna, Averroes) who transmitted it to Latin Scholasticism (Thomas Aquinas). The Aristotelian framework still structures university education today — the division into 'departments' is essentially Aristotelian.
