Existential Risk Studies
Academic field studying threats that could cause human extinction or permanent civilizational collapse.
Academic field studying threats that could cause human extinction or permanent civilizational collapse. Founded by Nick Bostrom's 2002 paper Existential Risks: Analyzing Human Extinction Scenarios and institutionalised at the Future of Humanity Institute (Oxford, 2005-2024) and the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk (Cambridge, 2012). Major risk categories: misaligned AI, engineered pandemic, nuclear war, climate catastrophe, asteroid/comet impact, supervolcanic eruption, unknown unknowns. Methodologically committed to longtermism (the moral significance of vast future populations) in its mainstream form, though this commitment has come under critique post-2022 (Torres, Gebru, the FTX scandal). The framework's relation is critical-engagement: the field asks an important question but often operates under Sapienist assumptions (it claims to know what wisdom-aligned civilization would look like). Operational signature: (8+7)×3 — inspection-and-fear projected onto future.
