Founded by Plato c. 387 BCE. The original Academy operated for nearly 900 years until Justinian closed it in 529 CE. Three phases: Old Academy (Plato, Speusippus), Middle Academy (Arcesilaus — skeptical turn), New Academy (Carneades). The Academy's core curriculum — geometry, astronomy, dialectic, and the Form of the Good — became the template for all subsequent higher education. After closure, Platonic thought survived through Neoplatonism and was recovered in the Renaissance by Ficino's revival of the Florentine Academy.
